  13. DESCRIPTION

  15.     GetActive transfers the active file from the NNTP server to a local
  16.     file. The active file is used at the server to define the available
  17.     newsgroups, and the article numbers present in those groups.

  19.     GRn and NNTPxfer both use an activefile. When the NNTP option is set
  20.     for GRn, GRn looks first for the active file to be named
  21.     UULib:News/Active, and secondly UULib:Newsgroups. NNTPxfer will used
  22.     whatever active file is specified by the user, and has no default.

  25. PRAGMATICS
  26.  
  27.     Using your NNTP server's active file on your system is probably NOT
  28.     the right thing to do.    It is very likely that your server will carry
  29.     many more newsgroups than you desire, and NNTPxfer will attempt to
  30.     transfer articles for every newsgroup named in its active file.

  32.     As of February, 1994, Usenet volume was about 125 megabytes a day,
  33.     for over 4,000 newsgroups.

  35.     Also, the article numbers named in the server's active file will
  36.     represent current figures. You would not receive any new news until
  37.     after new news arrives at your server. Use of the "newgroup" command
  38.     will transfer all articles in the desired newsgroup.

  40.     Last, but certainly not least, NNTPxfer trying process all of that
  41.     news would takes LOTS of memory.
